Congress did not spell out the specifics of the message received by Priyanka or exactly when a warning was received but said it came around the same time when other identified victims were contacted by WhatsApp.
“I want to tell that Priyanka Gandhi also received a similar message from WhatsApp around the same time,” Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala said on a day on which there were also claims of NCP leader Praful Patel and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee‘s phones having been hacked.
Taking to Twitter to negate the claim, BJP’s IT cell chief Amit Malviya said, “Haven’t we seen the Congress imagining things that didn’t exist? Remember them claiming that Rahul Gandhi’s life was in danger when a green light, of a video camera, flashed on his face during a media briefing? Well, that’s the level of their leaders’ credibility in public life.”

Malviya’s comment referred to an incident in the thick of elections in April when Congress had termed flashing of a green light on Rahul’s face as a “serious security breach”. But it turned out to be an embarrassment as the light was found to be emanating from the mobile of a camera person working for the AICC, BJP said.
When the WhatsApp scandal broke last week, Congress had alleged that it was the handiwork of the BJP government and journalists, opposition leaders and judges had been spied upon. It had urged the Supreme Court to take cognisance of the matter.
Stepping up its attack, Congress asked if the Modi government had spied on citizens and political leaders ahead of the 2019 parliamentary election, alleging that the high mandarins of the central government were guilty of criminal offences.
