Political, economic situation critical: Sinha

Srinagar, November 25

Former external affairs minister Yashwant Sinha-led Concerned Citizens’ Group (CCG) — the first high-profile civil society delegation from country to visit Kashmir post the abrogation of Article 370 — has termed the political and economic situation critical in the region.

The CCG concluded their visit on Monday but due to bad weather could not fly to Delhi. “Both political and economic situation is critical. I will say there is no political space here. It is all force. Government of India’s new policy is to do everything by force. That is what they are attempting to do in Kashmir,” Sinha said.

Sinha said people have not accepted the Centre’s decision of abrogation of Article 370.

“People have not accepted it. I want to congratulate people of Kashmir for showing huge patience. I’m sure people’s patience will be able to win over government’s actions,” he said.

He said apple growers and farmers have incurred huge losses because of the ongoing situation as well as the untimely snowfall of November 7.

“On horticulture and farming front, the situation is critical. Farmers have incurred huge losses and government is not reaching out to people,” he said.

The group also comprises former chief information commissioner Wajahat Habibullah; executive director, Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation (CDR), Sushobha Barve; Air Vice-Marshal (Retd.), Kapil Kak and senior journalist Bharat Bhushan.

The CCG delegation arrived here on Friday for a four-day visit to understand the political and economic fallout of the abrogation of Article 370, which provided special status to J&K.

Authorities on September 17 did not allow Sinha to meet people and deported him from Srinagar International Airport.
