Niko Kovac has faced intensified scrutiny after Bayern Munich suffered their worst defeat of the season thus far, losing 5-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt at the Commerzbank Arena. Kovac is no stranger to being under the microscope, as the Croatian was harshly criticized last fall when Bayern had a string of disappointing results, but they still went on to collect a domestic double. Bayern have now dropped a total of 9 points this season (3 draws, 2 losses) and it’s already prompted pundits to start assessing who should replace Kovac if Bayern’s front office do decide his sack him at any point before the season ends.
Per a report by Spanish outlet AS, Bayern are eyeing the possibility of hiring former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri if Kovac were to get the sack in the near future. The Italian manager left Juventus after the end of the 2018/2019 season and was replaced by former Napoli and Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri. Allegri collected 5 Scudettos during his tenure as Juventus boss and also took his side to the Champions League final in 2015 in Berlin, which they lost to Barcelona, 3-1. With his pedigree, Allegri could prove to be a more than capable fit to replace Kovac, though he doesn’t possess Bundesliga experience and doesn’t speak German, which both Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness have said is a prerequisite they prefer for Bayern managers, at least before they hired Kovac after Jupp Heynckes retired.
AS also suggest that Ajax manager Erik ten Hag and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino are realistic options that are being weighed by Bayern. Ten Hag, of course, would likely be the collective preference amongst Bayern fans given his time as manager of Bayern Munich II from 2013-2015 and his success with Ajax, but he’s under contract with Ajax until June 2022.
