State varsities may miss UGC deadline | Ahmedabad News

TNN | Updated: Oct 27, 2019, 4:15 IST

Ahmedabad: Despite repeated reminders from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to vice-chancellors of all universities to fill vacant teaching posts, Gujarat universities are likely to miss the November 10 deadline.
There are more than 500 vacancies in universities across the state for various posts, including professors and assistant professors. For the non-teaching staff, the number of vacant positions would be more than 800, said government sources.
“The state government has so far not initiated any steps for carrying out a recruitment drive for universities,” an official said. “Diwali holidays have begun and the chance of meeting the UGC deadline is very slim.”
Earlier this month, the UGC once again sent reminders to all universities and colleges to take the recruitment of teaching staff seriously and to fill up vacancies at the earliest. This was the fifth reminder over the past few months, sources said.
The letter warned that delay in filling vacant positions of faculty members would be viewed seriously and could lead to action. According to the UGC directive, all universities should update the status of the recruitment process and upload details on the official portal of the UGC.
Higher educational institutions were told upload the data related to vacant teaching positions, reservations and advertisement details, recruitment process status, and steps taken to fill up these posts. The data has to be uploaded by 10 November 2019, the UGC directive said.
The state government has meanwhile decided to start a recruitment drive for filling 1,004 teaching posts for 352 grant-in-aid colleges across the state. “There is no such plan in sight for university-level recruitments,” said another government official.
