Bareilly: Police have registered cases against two groups on Monday night for allegedly getting into a scuffle in Bhoyas village in Budaun district over the payment for a mobile phone.
According to police, Veeresh purchased a phone for Rs 7,000 from a man identified as Rajeev. He made a payment of Rs 3,500 and promised Rajeev that he will pay the remaining amount after a fortnight. When Rajeev along with his brother went to Veeresh’s place on Monday and demanded the remaining amount, the latter allegedly abused and beat them up. Hence, the duo returned home and informed others in the area. The community members later returned to the spot and allegedly beat up Veeresh, a Dalit, and his aides and passed casteist slurs. A video of the incident in which the crowd roaming with lathis in the village was shared on social media. On Wednesday, members of Bhim Army staged a protest seeking action in the matter.
Jarifnagar station house officer Rakesh Chauhan said, “Both the groups attacked each other but none of them sustained injuries. Both the groups have lodged complaints against each other. We are investigating the matter.”
Police said that based on the complaint of Veeresh, an FIR was lodged against Rajeev and his accomplices under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 452 (house trespass after preparation of hurt) and 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) of IPC and sections of SC/ST Act. Similarly, Rajeev lodged an FIR against Veeresh and his aides under IPC sections 147, 323 and 504.
